Imagine an island from another planet. How does it look
like?
Now, stop imagining it because such an island probably does
exist. It’s named Socotra and it is situated in the Indian Ocean.
This island
has been isolated from Africa for 7 million years.
That is the reason why there
are 700 extremely rare species of flora and fauna on Socotra.
Most of the species are endemic and you can’t find them
nowhere on Earth.
The climate on the islands is dry, hash and hot. Because of
the extreme life conditions on Socotra islands, there live some of weirdest
plants on Earth.
The Dragon tree is one of the plants which grows there.
This
tree looks like mushroom and it has branches which spread out towards the sky.
In the end of branches there are tiny leafs. It produces a substance called
dragon blood. This red liquid is used in medicine.
There is also the Desert rose (Adenium Obesium), which looks
like an elephant foot. In its trunk it has a lot of water and it has beautiful
flowers on the end of the branches.
Dorstenia gigas is a plant which grows from the bare rock.
This is amazing and the weirdest of all because its roots grow straight from
the rock.
Another plant that deserves to be mentioned is the cucumber
tree, which looks quite unusual.
