Snails Are Getting Slower

Snails are animals which belong to the group called mollusks. The most widespread snail in the world is Helix Pomatia. Snail live on the ground, but some species of them live in the water. Also there are some snails which are poisonous, such as the marbled cone snail. They are known for their calcium carbonate shell which helps it protect itself from the sun and enemies. All of their vital organs are placed in the shell, while their lower part is called a foot because they use it for moving.

Some snail do not have shell. The land snails are hermaphrodite and they eat grass to survive. However, just because they are hermaphrodite it does not mean they don’t mate. In the process of mating they exchange semen which can be used over a period of few years when necessary.

Snails that live in cooler environments hibernate during the winter.

When we are talking about snails, we always wonder why they move so slowly. However, compared to their body dimension, the animal isn’t as slow as we think. The normal sped of a garden snails is 0.03 mph. Evolution made snails slow. Snails still evolve and they are getting much slower.

The reason? They are reducing their metabolism and together with it they move more slowly. Their energy is used for faster growth and better reproduction instead of speed.
