The Bird That Flies Through Thousands of Kilometers without a Stop

Blackpoll warblers are birds which live in North Canada and South America. That is a bird who migrates every year from cooler environment of North Canada to warmer places in South America. Their Latin name is Setophaga striata.

Blackpoll warbler is a very small bird. When adult they weigh only 12 grams. It eats small insects, such as ants and termites. These birds migrate every year, and it’s fascinating how it completes the whole journey without a stop. We’re talking about 2,700 kilometers.

Scientists discovered that blackpoll warbles fly without stopping for three days. When flying, they reach speeds up to 13 meters per second.

There are around 25 studies about this phenomenon, but scientists still can’t find how do these little birds manage to complete such a journey and where do they get their energy from. This may easily be one of the fastest and best energy saving birds in the world.
